Artist Statement

Artist at work

My work reflects my personal interaction with the physical world that surrounds us on a daily basis. The play of light on both man made and natural objects/surfaces is only one of the elements that require the viewer's attention. Equally important is the compositional construction employed allowing the viewer a visual journey.

In the handling of landscapes my treatment of trees is as if they are human beings reaching up to the skys with arms outstretched. This "doing" art requires both conscious and sub-conscious processes and decisions. Working in layers from the underpainting to the final surface allows for a textured/tactile surface that personally brings satisfaction to me as the painter. I do not work from photographs on any level, rather I employ on location graphite/oil sketches returning to one of my studios to further explore my original thoughts and ideas. I also paint and draw from fragments of memories of scenes real and imagined.

My domestic interiors present opportunities to deal with spatial relationships of objects in their environment. Typically I employ a very loose handling of the linear qualities of the composition allowing for a sense of the familiar as well as genuine warmth. My hope is that the viewer is encouraged to walk or climb inside my work and explore the seen and perhaps unseen.
